Pompano Season Approaches

Some pompano have already made their way to the Panhandle beaches but the mad rush is still pending some warmer weather.  Late March to early April has always been the best time for me to catch pompano in the surf.  Anyone with a beach chair and a fishing pole can catch fish that time of year.   Sand fleas and shrimp are great live bait options while you can pick up pompano jigs for cheap if you choose to fish artificials.  If you like to fish live or dead bait a double drop rig is the preferred set up.  Typically we use a pyramid weight at the end of the line and two small circle hooks above that to keep the bait off of the bottom and therefore more visible to the fish swimming by.  Pompano have excellent eyesight so the less “stuff” you can have on the line (swivels, clamps, etc.) the more natural your bait will look and the more bites you will get. Stop by and see Chris Phillips at Hot Spots Bait and Tackle in Gulf Breeze and he can get you set up with everything you need to get started.  Send us your pompano pictures and we will post them on the site!!!  wes [Email address: wes #AT# breakinlines.com - replace #AT# with @ ]
