Pensacola Bay Report 8/23/09

August 24, 2009 · Filed Under Articles · Comment

Launched from Bayou Texar at around 1:00pm.  Pulled up to the my first spot and the wind was really on me.  I lost anchor a few times but managed to fish for about an hour and got two real nice specks (22″ and 24″).   The 24″ was the second biggest of my lifetime.  I’ve caught them longer but not that fat before.   I also got 4 snapper and a crevalle jack.  After the anchor pulled a 4th time I ran to the 3-Mile Bridge and score 2 Bluefish over 6 pounds.  A run over to Deadman’s Island produced a spanish mackerel for the grill and a couple ladyfish.  Here are the pics of the pig speck:

Species Spotlight II - Crevalle Jack

Crevalle Jacks are one of my all time favorite fish to catch.  Sometimes reffered to as yellow jacks, they are all bite and just a little (grunting) bark.  These fish are one a mission.  Eat everything in their path and then go find something else to eat.  Large schools of smaller jacks can be seen splashing and churning the waters down sea walls and around docks and bridges.  They are great fun to catch and are found on all Florida coasts and even on the offshore reefs.

Fishing Report 6/23/08

Tarpon are still the hot topic but the full moon has spread them out between offshore, the beaches, and the bay bridges.  If I were going after them I think I would start at the Sunshine Skyway and move to the Gandy from there.  Snook are still on fire on the beaches and at the passes.   I did manage to toss a jig around in a canal yesterday… I caught one ladyfish and one small crevalle jack.  Also saw a 3′ barracuda under a dock that came out to look at the jig but then moved on.
