Fishing Report 11/12/08
Inshore: Good reports of grouper starting to be picked up in the bay. Also some redfish and trout on the flats of Fort DeSoto. I have seen a few reports of flounder, pompano, and permit on the beaches which is good to hear.
Offshore: Heavy winds are keeping anglers close to the beach most of the time, but good reports of red and gag grouper in 35+ feet.
Fishing Report 10/4/08
Inshore: The redfish bite and snook bite has been very hot from the passes to around the mangrove islands. Mangrove snapper are still eating well and can be found around any kind of structure. Still some left over pompano around area bridges.
Offshore: Just a few reports of some gag grouper and some snapper. Pretty rough this week offshore.
Fishing Report 7/24/08
Been a dry spell for me fishing. Tossed some DOA lures around in the surf last night in search of snook with no luck. It was a little bit rough but not too bad, I think the swell from Hurricane Dolly mixed up the water some.
Inshore: Mangrove Snapper, trout, pompano, and permit are showing up around south Pinellas and Tampa Bay. Reports of small sharks are coming in from the entire area.
Fishing Report 7/21/08
Same as I have been reporting…. Mangrove Snapper and snook are plentiful on the beaches and passes. Good reports coming in from all of the bay area beaches. The trout bite also has been good and even seen some bycatch of sharks, pompano, cobia, and jacks on the flats while trout fishing.
Offshore the fishing is hot for reds and gags. Start in about 70-feet for best results unless you have some secret spots in the 40’s.
Species Spotlight - Bluefish
This article is the first in a series of articles that outline some of the less desirable fish and why maybe you should start to go out and target them rather than consider them as bycatch. More commonly thought of as a northeast, New England fish, Bluefish are a regular in Florida. Typically they are smaller sized than their northeastern Grandparents but they are great fun for both east coast and west coast anglers in Florida! Bluefish are NOT a member of the Jack family along with Pompano, Crevalle, Amberjacks, Permit, and many others (See comment below) :) .
