Lots of Life on the Water

August 16, 2008 · Filed Under Articles · 3 Comments

Today was out fishing and saw several cool things.  I got out at about 2:30pm to a ripping outgoing tide.  Fished the pass for about 4 hours.  Not too much for me to show but was able to catch some cool photos of tailing snook and some caught hogfish!  Also saw a red grouper caught.  I managed a couple snapper and a gag grouper.  Click on this article and check out the pics below.

The name of the game has shifted slightly.  Mangrove snapper are everywhere right now.  On every trip I have caught them and seen everyone else doing the same.  Lots of reports also from Gandy Bridge, Sunshine Skyway, and the passes.  Speckled Trout also have crashed onto the scene.  Topwater and big baits are producing the big fish up to and over 20″.  Snook are still at the passes.

Inshore:  The name of the game right now is snook and mangrove snapper!  Snapper are everywhere around the bay bridges and anywhere that you can find good structure.  Snook are around the passes and as the water clears back up they will be all over the beaches of Pinellas County again.

Offshore:  Good reports of Red Grouper!  Gags are mixed in but reds seem to have invaded.  Divers are getting good bags of hogfish and even some nice snapper and cobia.  Further offshore: American Red Snapper in the 130 feet plus range and mahi in about 80 feet and on out.

Good fishing all around our area this week.  Check the lights at night for some good action with the big 3 (snook, redfish, specks).  Also nice reports of Gags and Kingfish on some of the offshore wrecks and ledges along with some spotty permit and cobia.  That’s all if you can keep away from the droves of fire trucks (red grouper).

Here’s a sighting/report from Oliver Tallyn:
